Barcelona consider Unai Simon as Marc-Andre ter Stegen replacement

Barcelona are reportedly considering the possibility of signing 24-year-old Spain international Unai Simon next summer.

According to a report from the Catalan media El Nacional, Unai Simon is the subject of Barcelona’s interest in a possible transfer in next summer’s transfer window. The 24-year-old Spain international is seen as a long-term replacement for Marc-André ter Stegen.

Unai Simon has been with Athletic Bilbao since joining their youth team in 2011. Since then he has made giant strides, especially since making his first-team debut at the start of the season. 2018/19. Now used to the club and the country, the Spain international is widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in his country.

To date, the 24-year-old has made 107 appearances for Athletic Bilbao, keeping 33 clean sheets in the process. The player’s progress has not gone unnoticed, with one of the biggest clubs in the world at Barcelona keen to sign him.

The interest in Simon is not too surprising, as Marc-André ter Stegen faces an uncertain future at Camp Nou following another disastrous performance in goal. The Catalan giants are ready to take advantage of the German goalkeeper with Bayern Munich keen to sign him.

Barcelona’s desire is to recoup around € 70million in exchange for ter Stegen’s services before reinvesting that amount to sign several players. Selling the 29-year-old will also prompt the Blaugrana signing a replacement, with Neto intending to leave the club, while Inaki Pena could go on loan next summer.

To that end, Andre Onana is seen as the perfect option to replace ter Stegen at Barcelona as he will arrive with a free transfer. However, the La Liga heavyweights have fallen behind Inter Milan in the race to sign the Ajax keeper, which is why they turned their attention to Simon.

The 24-year-old is Spain’s premier goalkeeper, and his status as one of the game’s top scorers makes him an attractive option for Barcelona. However, Athletic Bilbao could charge a premium for relinquishing their precious asset, given that his contract expires in 2025. So it remains to be seen whether Barcelona can afford Simon or shift their attention elsewhere instead.
