Memphis Depay is one of several Barcelona strikers who face an uncertain future this summer.
After being maligned as a replacement for Lionel Messi, the Dutchman has found himself in the pecking order of Barcelona’s current squad, with many expecting him to leave before the start of the new season.
Diario SPORT have offered an update on Depay’s future, suggesting the striker has been urged by Barcelona to find a new club, if he is to continue his progress and seal regular playing time at the top level of the soccer.
However, coach Xavi Hernandez is open to the idea of keeping him at Camp Nou, as a potential replacement for the first-team strikers. In fact, it’s possible Depay will stay at the club if Barcelona fail to keep Ousmane Dembele this summer.
The Frenchman became a free agent after exhausting his contract at Camp Nou at the end of June. Barca remain hopeful of reaching an agreement on a contract extension but it won’t be a surprise to see the striker move on as he isn’t too keen on accepting Barcelona’s reduced salary package .
If Dembele leaves Camp Nou, the door could open for Depay to stay at the club and help Xavi usher in a new era at the club.
However, the Catalans are expected to cash in on the Dutchman if they receive a lucrative offer for the striker. The player has been tight-lipped about his future so far and is ready to play the waiting game to see if there’s an opportunity for him to stay at Camp Nou.
The former Lyon starlet has also been picky about his next club as he wants to continue playing in the Champions League. This could make the job a bit difficult for Barcelona, in their quest to offload their unwanted stars ahead of the new season.
