Barcelona are said to have taken another step towards signing underprivileged Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek in January.

According to a report by sportBarcelona could come close to capturing Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek in the upcoming January transfer window after the Dutchman changed his representatives.

Van de Beek, a product of the AFC Ajax youth academy, landed at Manchester United in the summer of last year on a contract worth £ 35million. Expectations were high after the smart acquisition, given the 24-year-old’s performance for Dutch heavyweights over the past two years.

However, things hardly went as planned for van de Beek and Manchester United. After a debut goal against Crystal Palace, the Dutch international failed to establish himself as a regular starter alongside Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Indeed, van de Beek only started four Premier League appearances in his debut campaign at Old Trafford, which has led to exit speculation this summer. Solskjaer and United have blocked a late move to Premier League rivals Everton with the promise of giving him a bigger role at the club.

However, this turned out to be wrong as van de Beek suffered again from a lack of playing time. Indeed, since the start of the 2021/22 season, the former Ajax midfielder has not has appeared only three times in all competitions, totaling up to 141 minutes of field action. Understandably, he’s been disappointed with life at Old Trafford and is looking for a January outing.

In order to secure a move, van de Beek also changed agents recently and is now represented by Ali Dursun. According to the aforementioned report, the move brought the Manchester United star one step closer to a winter stint at La Liga heavyweight Barcelona.

It’s no secret that the Catalan giants are on the hunt for an experienced midfielder after missing Georginio Wijnaldum’s signing on a free transfer last summer. Van de Beek has been on their radar for some time now, with theBlaugrana expressing an interest in obtaining its services in the coming window.

The 24-year-old is a close friend of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong, the pair having played together for Ajax and being team-mates for the Netherlands. In addition, van de Beek’s new agent Dursun also represents de Jong and has close ties to the Barcelona hierarchy, making it easier to make a move a reality.

On top of that, the presence of compatriots Memphis Depay and Luuk de Jong on the condition that he stays after January adds to the appeal of the Manchester United star. Van de Beek had offered himself to Barcelona during the summer, and in case all goes according to plan, he could be on his way to Catalonia in January.

The report insists, however, that any move would be loaned with an option to make it permanent at the end of the season, due to Barca’s delicate financial situation. It now remains to be seen whether Van de Beek will eventually leave Manchester for Catalonia in January.
