According to a Spanish media Mundo Deportivo on Sunday, FC Barcelona are ready to abandon Samuel Umtiti and Miralem Pjanic. That is, the club offers them the opportunity to join another club without the need for transfer fees, and all because of their desire to keep Lionel Messi.

Messi “frees” Umtiti and Pjanic

Why would the club do this? It is simply a matter of economy. By reducing the overall payroll – estimated at around 200 million euros ($ 237 million) – they will be able to afford what Messi wants to stay at Camp Nou. The Argentine star – who still shows his worth in the Copa America – is currently out of contract.

The report says neither of the two players, both seen as surplus to Ronald Koeman’s needs for the coming season, has accepted the offer. More than that, the belief is that Umtiti wants to stay at the club and fight for his place.

Pjanic, on the other hand, would consider the option but is in no hurry to decide. Both Inter Milan and Juventus are said to be interested in the Bosnian.

Other actors should also be offered the same exit clause but, despite the rationale of this strategy, this could backfire. Barca who could be in a much weaker position around the negotiating table when discussing which players they want to recoup transfer fees from.
