Monty Don is a national treasure and the British public’s favorite gardener. The 66-year-old presenter has been popular for years after first appearing on our screens in 2003 for his hit BBC show. gardener’s world.

However, viewers not only love Monty, but also have a soft spot for his dog, which he regularly features on the show. Together, the TV star and her adorable pet exude a calm demeanor and a sense that her private life is quiet even though that hasn’t always turned out to be the case.

Prior to his fame, Monty struggled with depression after his failed jewelry business with his wife Sarah, whom he met in college. They met while both studying at Cambridge University in 1979, but it wasn’t until 1983 that they got married.

Monty is a darling TV presenter

The couple ran their dream shop in Knightsbridge but sadly their world fell apart in the late 1980s. Times were tough as due to the stock market crash they got into debt and because of that they were forced to close their business.

Monty had previously opened up about this difficult time in his life, revealing that his worried wife had pleaded with him to seek help for her mental health issue. Sarah made the decision after their children asked “Why is daddy always crying?” »

Monty added to The Times: “She said you need to see a doctor because I can’t deal with you and three young children and our life as it is. I need help and the only way to get help is for you to get help.”

“So I did this classic thing of going to the doctor and saying my knee was hurting, and then he said, ‘Anything else? Antidepressants helped at first and I had cognitive behavioral therapy on the NHS which was very good. And I used a lightbox; that was good too.”

Monty faced a health shock while filming Around the world in 80 gardens. The gardener suffered from peritonitis, which causes redness and swelling of the tissues lining the belly or abdomen.

Monty is famous for his many dogs, a few of which appear often on the show. Nigel, a male golden retriever, appeared most often, often seen sleeping or sniffing in the background. However, he died on May 11, 2020, just six days before his 12th birthday.

He told BBC Radio 4 Today that Nigel had been more than a companion and helped him fight his depression. He said: “He was a slightly brainless bear, what he had was this absolute sense of purity. He exuded a kind of untarnished innocence and we all love our dogs, everyone thinks their dog is special, I’ve had a lot of dogs and there was something special about Nigel.”

He has another dog called Nellie and a few others who don’t appear on screen.
