Europa League draw Round of 16 date, time, teams, TV and broadcast as matches and schedule are set

The 16-team field still standing in the 2022 Europa League is almost fixed after the conclusion of the special round of playoffs.

The two-legged playoffs held on February 17 and 24 determined the final eight teams to join the eight Europa League group winners in the round of 16.

The round of 16 and subsequent rounds – quarter-finals and semi-finals – will each be played over two legs, with the team that scores the most goals over the two matches advancing to the next round. The two teams left standing after the semi-finals will meet in the 2022 Europa League final on May 18 in Seville, Spain.

The only difference in the Europa League Round of 16 this year is that there is no away goal tiebreaker in case the teams are even on aggregate at the end of the second game. UEFA abolished the away goals rule in June 2021. Extra time and, if necessary, a penalty shoot-out will determine the winner should the teams be level on goals after 180 minutes.

How is the Europa League draw going?

The Europa League group winners will be seeded. They will be drawn against the winners of the knockout round, which saw the teams who came second in their Europa League groups play the teams who finished third in the Champions League groups.

The eight winners of the Europa League group stage will be able to play the second leg at home, which is seen as an advantage since any extra time or a penalty shoot-out would be played at home.

It should also be remembered that clubs from the same country cannot be drawn against each other at this stage. This restriction is removed from the quarter-finals.

There are three teams from Spain (Barcelona, Real Betis and Sevilla) and three from Germany (Eintracht Frankfurt, Bayer Leverkusen, RB Leipzig), while France (Lyon, Monaco) and Portugal (Porto, Braga) have two representatives. Sevilla dream of qualifying for the final which takes place on their own ground.
