Olympic champion Florian Wellbrock and Jeanette Spiwoks win the LEN Open Water Cup in Barcelona

The German duo of Florian Wellbrock and Jeanette Spiwoks won the men’s and women’s titles in the LEN Open Water Cup race on Saturday in Barcelona. The loaded field included four of the six medalists in the 10-kilometer race at the Tokyo Olympics.

Wellbrock, fresh off his gold medal in Tokyo, claimed another victory, covering the course in one hour, 48 minutes, 20.10 seconds. He escaped late to finish nearly two seconds ahead of the Italian Domenico Acarenza.

As he did at the Tokyo Olympics, Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy won bronze, 7.7 seconds behind the pace of Wellbrock. He beat the Tokyo silver medalist Kristof Rasovszky from Hungary for third place. Marc-Antoine Olivier de France, who won the first stage of the series in Ohrid, North Macedonia in August in an impressive summer, finished 10th far away.

Spiwoks and Lea Boy made a German 1-2 in the women’s race, the swimmers separated by two and a half seconds at the finish line. A pair of Italians in a duel for bronze, with Giulia Gabbrielleschi pass his hand first by 0.02 seconds on the compatriot Ginevra Taddeucci.

Anna olasz from Hungary, who finished fourth in Tokyo, finished sixth in Barcelona on Saturday. Sharon van Rouwendaal from the Netherlands finished 11th in his first race since winning Olympic silver.

The Barcelona stage is Stage 3 of the 2021 LEN Open Water Cup Series. (Stage 2, which was scheduled for September 19 in Rijeka, Croatia, has been canceled.) The series travels alongside Piombino , in Italy, on October 3 before ending in Alghero six days later for the fifth part.
