Gavi threatens to leave FC Barcelona if Bernardo Silva leaves Manchester City

FC Barcelona midfield wonderkid Gavi is threatening to leave the club if he signs Bernardo Silva in the current transfer window.

The La Masia academy product, who turned 18 this week, was one of Barca’s main highlights of a lackluster and trophyless season in 2021/2022.

Moving to the senior Blaugrana side under Ronald Koeman, he became a full Spain international in quick succession and is seen as the club’s future alongside Pedri and Ansu Fati.

Yet while both of these players are tied to long-term deals that extend beyond the mid-2020s, Gavi is a free agent next summer amid interest from Liverpool and Bayern Munich.

Although it was previously thought the youngster and his side would agree to a new deal after the Andalusian comes of age, they reportedly informed chairman Joan Laporta and his board that Gavi would not renew if Bernardo Silva joined Manchester City.

This information was relayed by the The Porteria program in Catalonia, and comes on the same day as SPORT say Barca have made contact with City to discuss Silva’s potential transfer.

After Barca successfully landed Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha and Jules Kounde last month, Silva is now believed to be manager Xavi Hernandez’s last remaining transfer target and is reportedly available for a fee of around €80m. $81.5 million).

With Gavi considering waiting until the end of the current window on September 1 to see if Silva arrives or not, his contract renewal is therefore considered to be on ‘block’.

Simply put, it looks like the teenager doesn’t want to compete for minutes with Silva in a midfield where there are often only three spots.

Two of them are linked by skipper Sergio Busquets and Pedri, with Frenkie de Jong also in the mix, and Silva is unlikely to agree to move just to sit on the Camp Nou bench.

As Barca struggle to register their new signings and those who have already renewed their contracts, Gavi’s fate is also tied to De Jong’s as Barca cannot make a solid approach for Silva without first. sell the Dutchman and balance the books.

On Sunday, both players are set to take part in the Joan Gamper Trophy against Mexico’s Club Universidad Nacional.
