J. Balvin ends 2021 on an unexpected blow! The Colombian artist has been honored as “Afro-Latin Artist of the Year” and this honor raised more than a pair of eyebrows. The African Entertainment Awards selected the star over the weekend even though he is not an Afro-Latino, but a white Latino.

The controversy quickly spread to social media and J Balvin became a trending topic on Twitter. Multiple focused on Balvin’s race and ethnicity, while others questioned whether he received the award because of the Afro beats of his hits.

“I will need the African Entertainment Awards to keep it a little darker because how [the f###] they gave J Balvin white as s ### ass [an Afro-Latino] Artist of the year award. Sech and Ozuna are there ??? And are in fact black ???? one person tweeted, while another said that “J Balvin, a white latino, shouldn’t have accepted this award rather than real ones [Afro-Latino] artists.

“J Balvin won an award for blackness using black Caribbean music, dialect, rhythms and wardrobe. Whereas real Black Folx who have higher streaming numbers, better lyricism, better everything, and are actually lost BLACKS, ”a third person said.

The star later reacted to the award and shared an Instagram story thanking the honor and clarifying that he is not an Afro-Latino. “I’m not Afro-Latino, but thank you for recognizing my contributions to Afrobeat music and its community.
