Kuzmanov claims young challenger crown at Emilio Sanchez Academy

Dimitar Kuzmanov won his first crown on the ATP Challenger Tour by winning the € 44,820 Emilio Sanchez Academy clay court event organized by the Fundación Emilio Sánchez Vicario and held in El Prat de Llobregat, Barcelona, Spain.

The unranked Bulgarian upset the tournament’s No.1 Hugo gaston of France 6-3, 6-0 in the Sunday singles final. Kuzmanov, who played his second league game after finishing second for Serbian Nikola Milojevic at the Zadar Open in Croatia in early March, capitalized on six of his seven scoring chances after an hour and 12 minutes.

“It has been an amazing week for me here in Barcelona and I will remember it for the rest of my life,” Kuzmanov said after the game. “It’s a special tournament in a special city. I’m really happy to have succeeded today after having had a tough battle against a tough opponent. I am very emotional and cannot find the right word to describe how I feel.

Kuzmanov, winner of 20 trophies on the ITF Pro circuit and currently ranked 218th in the world, has won € 6,190 in prizes as well as 80 ATP ranking points.

“This tournament is very important for the players because it allows them to accumulate points in order to reach the Top 100”, tournament organizer and director Emilio Sanchez noted.

“We are proud to be able to offer these opportunities and we are very grateful to have the support of the Royal Spanish Tennis Federation, as well as the local tourist office and all the sponsors.”
