Manchester City have been linked with Barcelona starlet Pablo Gavira. The Spaniard has caught the attention of top European clubs with his high work rate and maturity on the ball. The midfielder is currently a regular holder under Xavi and has also more or less cemented his place in the XI of Spain.

Gavi, 17, is one of the most promising candidates and Barcelona are currently in talks with the former La Masia graduate over a new contract. That said, Gavi’s current contract expires in 2023 and the current priority of the former La Liga champions is to extend the midfielder’s stay at the club.

The 17-year-old’s contract also contains a £ 42million release clause and Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool are said to be interested in triggering the clause. The player, however, is keen to stay at Barca and that is why Manchester City are struggling to sign the prodigy. It comes according to off-side.

The midfielder’s intentions to succeed at Barca have also been confirmed by reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano. The Italian football journalist also revealed that Barcelona are currently in talks with Gavi over a new contract that will not have a release clause.

Chelsea, who are also said to be interested in signing the midfielder, risk being shot down by the player who doesn’t think of any side other than Barca, as it stands.

Liverpool have been linked with the young Spaniard but have made no attempt or contact to sign the prospect. That said, Barcelona are unlikely to part ways with Gavi as he has established himself as one of the essential cogs in Xavi’s engine. The former Al-Sadd manager is said to be a fan of Gavi and has praised the 17-year-old on numerous occasions.

This season, the young midfielder has managed to find the backhand once for the Blaugrana and has assisted on three occasions. The 17-year-old, however, has to work on his tackles as he seems to get carried away a bit too often resulting in penalties.

The Cityzens need a competent replacement for Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne, who have been injury prone for the past two years and are also in their 30s.

Do you think Manchester City will be able to attract Gavi to the Etihad?

Let us know.
