Patrice Evra demanded that Jorginho receive the Ballon d’Or trophy for his contributions to Chelsea and Italy.
Speaking on Amazon Prime Sports Video, Evra completely refuted the idea of ââhanding Lionel Messi his seventh honor in this particular individual category.
Instead, the former Manchester United defender wanted Jorginho to claim the prize.
Italian stallion
The midfielder is certainly among the favorites for the distinction, thanks to his efforts for club and country last season.
He was instrumental in Chelsea’s Champions League campaign, which was crowned with a winner’s medal.
This led to the 29-year-old being named UEFA’s Male Player of the Year.
Conquering Europe was apparently not enough for Jorginho, as he went on to claim European Championship glory with Italy over the summer.
Not bad for a player who is often dismissed by the football community at large.
Ballon d’Or lifting on November 29e would cap off a brilliant calendar year for Jorginho.
Evra’s rant
âIn my opinion, this Ballon d’Or is for (N’Golo) Kante or Jorginho; he (Jorginho) deserves it! », Expressed Evra.
âI don’t understand why people say ‘He’s just a midfielder’. He won everything, participating a lot in these triumphs.
âIn my opinion, this is an injustice. I’m sick of giving it to Messi. What did he win last year?
âOkay, the Copa America, but with Barcelona, ââwhat did he do?
âLast year Jorginho also won trophies that didn’t exist, so for me it’s an absolute injustice!
A match for Messi?
It is true that Messi has had a slightly more stagnant season than usual on his farewell tour with Barcelona.
Ronald Koeman’s side finished third in La Liga but won the Copa del Rey, even though Evra thought otherwise.
Moreover, the astute Argentine managed to score 38 goals and provide 14 assists.
By its intergalactic standards, that’s a pretty poor performance.
But for any ordinary footballer, such tallies often only occur once in a career.
Based on this evidence, there is still a strong case for Messi to be crowned King of the Ballon d’Or again.
Yet the competition is arguably tighter than it has been in previous ceremonies.
Five members of the Chelsea squad are scrambling for the title.
Alongside Jorginho, Kante, Mason Mount, Romelu Lukaku and Cesar Azpilicueta were all nominated.
Then there are Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe to face.
The final decision will be revealed in a little over a month, so keep your eyes open and ears open.
