Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) won a 1-0 Ligue 1 victory over Brest on Saturday at the Parc des Princes. Neymar scored the game’s only goal, while Gianluigi Donnarumma saved a penalty to help the Parisians secure all three points.
Meanwhile, Barcelona manager Xavi says the Blaugrana are still mourning the departure of Lionel Messi. In addition, a Manchester City midfielder, who is a target of the Parisians, could play at Camp Nou in January.
On that note, here’s a rundown of PSG’s top transfer stories as of September 10, 2022:
Barcelona still mourn Lionel Messi’s PSG exit, says Xavi
Barcelona are still mourning the departure of Lionel Messi, according to Xavi. The Argentine rose through the ranks at Camp Nou and eventually became the most decorated player in the club’s history. However, the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner had to leave the Blaugrana last summer as the club couldn’t renew his contract.
PSG then secured the signing of Messi, bringing him to the Parc des Princes on a knock from Bosman. The 35-year-old has had a difficult first season with the Parisians – scoring 11 times in all competitions – but has come out on top in the current campaign. Talks of a return to Barcelona continue to make the rounds but no decision has materialized so far.
Speaking to the press, relayed by PSG Talk, Xavi called Messi the best player in history. However, he acknowledged that the Argentine’s time at the club is history and other players will have to step up to make a difference.
“The mourning of the best in history will never end. Everything he gave to Barça was extraordinary. Unfortunately, it’s over. Now there are others who are called upon to make a difference”, Xavi said.
Messi has four goals and seven assists in eight games in all competitions this campaign
Bernardo Silva could join Camp Nou in January
Bernardo Silva could join Camp Nou in January, according to Sport via PSG Talk. The Manchester City midfielder is a target for PSG as the French giants failed to secure the player’s signature this summer. Sporting director Luis Campos could return for the Portuguese this winter.
Silva is also a target for Barcelona, who plan to dive for him at the start of the year. The Blaugrana were also linked with the Portuguese this summer and could have signed him if their other arrivals had been registered in time. The La Liga giants are now set to revisit their interest in the player in January which would be bad news for the Parisians.
There is little difference between Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, says expert
French football pundit Gregory Schneider has disputed Thierry Henry’s claims that Kylian Mbappe is better than Erling Haaland. The Arsenal legend recently claimed his compatriot is a versatile player while the Norwegian is more of a striker.
However, speaking on L’Equipe du Soir, as quoted by PSG Talk, Schneider said it was wrong to ignore Haaland’s creative instincts.
“I have no doubt that Mbappe is creative; it is often at the beginning of actions and then at the end. But (Thierry Henry) must not have seen Haaland for three years because I saw him do absolutely everything on the pitch,” Schneider said.
Schneider added that Haaland was at the center of things at Borussia Dortmund.
“I saw him shine in the transition game with Dortmund; I saw him move away; I saw him being at the beginning of the actions and then at the end. Where there is a little something in what Henry says is that Manchester City change Haaland. They are making him a pure surface player. But Haaland’s player is not that. I’m quite surprised he’s been denigrated like that,” Schneider said.
Haaland has scored 12 goals in eight games in all competitions for City this season.
