Report: Chelsea ‘desperate’ to complete takeover as Barcelona close in on defensive duo

Chelsea are ‘desperate’ to complete their ongoing takeover saga as Barcelona look to move closer to defensive partnership Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta, according to reports.

Xavi’s side reportedly already completed the signing of Blues centre-back Andreas Christensen earlier this month, having spent all of 2022 so far tied to a move to Spain.

Earlier this week, reports emerged that Rudiger’s agents held secret meetings in Barcelona with club representatives over a potential transfer.

According to the Evening Standard, Chelsea are becoming “desperate” to complete the sale of the club before Rudiger and Azpilicueta are attracted to Barcelona.

Due to the sanctions imposed on West London, the Blues are unable to agree or negotiate new deals with their players as they have to wait for the club to be taken over before resuming business as usual.

Thomas Tuchel expects tough game as Chelsea welcome Brentford

Both Rudiger and Azpilicueta have spent most of the season moving to various clubs as their contracts expire this summer.

However, hope remained around the duo that they could stick around beyond this season.

If the club’s situation isn’t resolved soon, the European champions could face a host of other problems.

Speaking at his side’s press conference ahead of their weekend clash with Brentford, Thomas Tuchel revealed he was ‘still confident’ Rudiger could stay.

“We can’t talk, negotiate with him and his agent. Fair enough if it’s true that he listens to other offers. It’s like that but I remain confident.”
