Spain have confirmed Brighton star Robert Sanchez has left the squad camp after testing positive for Covid-19.

Sanchez has been called up by La Roja boss Luis Enrique for this week’s friendlies against Albania and Iceland.

The 24-year-old has been tipped to land his second senior cap under Enrique but will now return to England.

Enrique opted to debut Brentford star David Raya – in Sanchez’s absence – with Barcelona substitute Arnau Tenas called up from the U21 squad as a replacement.

First-choice goalkeeper Unai Simon has been rested for Spain – at RCDE Stadium. The Athletic Club man is set to play against Iceland in La Coruña in midweek.

Sanchez’s misfortune could see him slip down the pecking order of Enrique’s plans as Raya becomes Simon’s new understudy in 2022.

La Roja will face four games in 10 days in June, as part of a compact version of the 2022/23 UEFA Nations League, with two more fixtures scheduled for September, in Group A2.
