One of Real Madrid’s most iconic defenders, Sergio Ramos, has put the Clasico rivalry aside to appreciate Barcelona legend Lionel Messi. Barcelona and Real Madrid are one of football’s fiercest rivals. Their matches are known for the overheated atmosphere and the exposed stars. Ramos, who has been at the heart of Los Blancos’ defense for 16 years, said Messi “will always have a role” in his squad. The Spaniard took part in 45 El Clasico matches during his stay in the Spanish capital. El Clasico is the most watched football game in sport.
Ramos, who was Real Madrid captain for several years, moved to France with Paris Saint-Germain and claimed he would love to play with one of the best footballers to ever honor the game, Lionel Messi. “I like to play with the best players and Messi was one of the best in the world,” Ramos told TNT Sports.
The Spaniard went on to say he had a good relationship with Messi, who also encouraged him to step out of his comfort zone and explore France. âDuring these years of rivalry, we formed a relationship and he sent me messages encouraging me to come to PSG,â Ramos added.
While PSG have big dreams and would like to emulate Real Madrid, they haven’t seen much success in Europe. Ramos has a wealth of experience having won 4 Champions League titles and 5 La Liga championships. The Parisian team hope that with Ramos at the heart of its defense, PSG will win their first Champions League title.
Ramos will be an experienced voice in defense, something the team have missed since Thiago Silva left for Chelsea. Mauricio Pochettino’s side have added a host of new stars such as World Cup winner Gianluigi Donnarumma and former Liverpool midfielder Georgino Wijnaldum.
