Xavi to be Barcelona boss, Howe ‘will be announced Newcastle boss’, Spurs outweigh Vitesse reaction, Chelsea transfer news

Newcastle are expected to confirm Eddie Howe’s appointment as new manager today.

The former Bournemouth chief is expected to put his pen to a two-and-a-half-year contract after agreeing to the tentative deal yesterday.

The Toons have been on the hunt for a new boss since Steve Bruce’s sacking last month.

Club manager Amanda Staveley has been working overtime to put Howe in place after the club’s failed attempts to recruit Villarreal boss Unai Emery.

Acting boss Graeme Jones is expected to speak at today’s press conference ahead of Saturday’s trip to Brighton and will be on staff at Howe’s backroom.

News that Howe had agreed to the deal being broken as three Prem’s teams engaged in European action last night.

It was all the fun of the fair as Antonio Conte’s reign at Spurs began with a Europa Conference League victory over Vitesse – but narrowly.

Strikes from Heung-min Son and Lucas Moura and an own goal from Jacob Rasmussen gave Spurs a 3-0 lead, but the Dutch reduced their backlogs to 3-2.

As if that was exciting enough, Tottenham finished the game with ten men after the sacking of Cristian Romero, and the Dutch team with nine men after the march of skipper Danilho Doekhi and goalkeeper Markus Schubert.

Benrahma’s brace in the second half had given West Ham a victory in the Europa League, but a goal against their late side of Tomas Soucek meant they had to settle for a 2-2 draw against Genk.

Leicester talisman Jamie Vardy saw a second-half penalty saved as they were held to a 1-1 draw in a Europa League clash with Spartak Moscow.

And all that European action has come on the back of Gareth Southgate announcing his final England squad for this month’s World Cup qualifiers against Albania and San Marino.

All of the Three Lions’ speeches were more about who was left out than who was called up with Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho among those who missed the cup.
